Wiscasset Selected to Participate in Maine’s Clean Energy Economic Revitalization Program (MECERP)

We are pleased to share that Wiscasset has been selected as one of six communities in Maine to participate in the Maine Clean Energy Economic Revitalization Program (MECERP), a new state initiative providing technical assistance for locally driven redevelopment planning.

The Maine Clean Energy Economic Revitalization Program (MECERP) is led by the Maine Department of Energy Resources and the Maine Department of Economic and Community Development. It is designed to support economic revitalization by offering high-quality planning and technical assistance to projects that leverage existing community energy assets for economic development, job creation, and alignment with Maine’s climate and clean energy goals.

The program, funded through the Governor’s Maine Jobs and Recovery Plan, helps communities with visioning, site planning, market analysis, partnership development, and identification of potential funding pathways — with the goal of maximizing each community’s ability to secure state and federal implementation funding later in the process .

Wiscasset’s participation in MECERP centers on planning efforts for two significant local sites:

  • The 33-acre Birch Point Peninsula, best known for the decommissioned Mason Station site

  • The 297-acre parcel along Old Ferry Road, across from the decommissioned Maine Yankee Nuclear Plant site

These sites represent major opportunities for future economic, community, and energy-related development, and the technical assistance provided through MECERP will help guide community visioning, stakeholder engagement, and strategic planning.

According to the state announcement, selected communities will receive guidance to help “revitalize these iconic sites to create good-paying jobs, drive local economic development, and meet state climate and clean energy goals” — objectives that align closely with RePower Wiscasset’s mission and the community’s long-term aspirations.

We look forward to sharing more as Wiscasset’s MECERP planning process continues.
