Next-Generation Geothermal Energy Production

Pioneering next-generation clean power in partnership with local innovators

RePower Wiscasset is working to support an exciting new chapter in Wiscasset’s clean energy story — the development of an advanced geothermal power system that could position our town at the forefront of global innovation.

Unlike traditional geothermal energy — which relies on pumping water through underground rock formations — this next-generation system uses a closed-loop process that circulates supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO₂) through sealed underground wells. The CO₂ acts as a clean, efficient heat-transfer fluid, eliminating the need for water and completely avoiding the environmental risks associated with older geothermal methods.

This technology, developed by Peregrine Turbine Technologies (PTT) right here in Wiscasset, can achieve dramatically higher efficiency than conventional geothermal systems, producing more power from less heat and land. It’s carbon-free, emissions-free, and even capable of long-term carbon sequestration, all with a small surface footprint.

PTT has proposed purchasing the former Mason Station (Birch Point) property to build its new corporate headquarters and energy R&D campus, while also seeking an option on 40 acres of the town-owned Old Ferry Road property for a state-of-the-art geothermal facility. The proposed system could ultimately deliver up to 900 megawatts of clean electricity directly into the CMP grid — on par with the historic Maine Yankee output.

Beyond the technology itself, this project could deliver major local benefits:

  • High-quality jobs in engineering, manufacturing, and operations.

  • New tax revenue and potential local energy cost savings.

  • Collaboration with schools and universities on science and workforce training.

  • Strategic use of industrial land in line with Wiscasset’s clean energy and economic goals.

RePower Wiscasset is working closely with the company, town officials, and state partners to help explore this opportunity and ensure that Wiscasset residents are informed, involved, and positioned to share in its benefits.
